We analyze the effect of providing a guaranteed rate to the UBR service class on the TCP performance over UBR. We describe an enhancement to UBR+ called the guaranteed rate service. Guaranteed rate service provides a minimum rate guarantee to the UBR traffic class. We examine effect of strict priority VBR over UBR traffic and show that the UBR performance can be improved by guaranteed rate. We also present simulation results for the effect of guaranteed rate on TCP efficiency and fairness metrics for LAN, WAN and satellite networks.
