Abstract:
Recent proliferation of various cloud computing platforms shows the need for consolidated services on the Internet. openSDN is a collaborative research effort to investigate the properties and requirements of an open service delivery network (SDN) architecture. A SDN is a secure, specialized service-aware communication infrastructure that can connect multiple cloud computing platforms, enterprise data centers and end user access networks. It provides a generic set of primitives that allow context specific networks to be setup more naturally, making it more efficient, expressive and easy to deploy and manage.
Distributed applications hosted on cloud computing platform, such as, online games, virtual spaces, etc. can use openSDN as the underlying platform. openSDN opens a new opportunity for telecom service providers who can use it to provide powerful telecom environments that allow third party owned services to be set up on their network infrastructure.
