With the integration of voice, video, and data over networks, quality of service has become a hot topic recently. A number of solutions have been proposed at various standards bodies including IEEE 802.3, IETF, and ATM Forum.
ATM Forum has designed service categories; IEEE 802.3 is incorporating priorities in LANs; IETF initially worked on integrated services and RSVP and recently moved on to differentiated services for IP users. These approaches will be briefly explained.
The key issue is which of these approaches are realistic for users and at the same time achievable for service providers and network designers. These and other issues in providing end-to-end QoS will be discussed in this presentation.
