Traffic Management and Quality of Service (QoS) are the key features of ATM that distinguish it from current networking protocols and makes ATM suitable for deployment in high-speed networks and for providing performance guarantees in an integrated environment.
We have been instrumental in the design and development of the traffic management features of ATM and have developed algorithms that are specially suitable for large high-speed networks. These algorithms to improve the performance on ATM networks will be presented.
Although ATM networks do have QoS mechanisms, users and providers are finding it difficult to use these mechanisms. These limitations will be described.
Internet Protocol (IP) currently lacks both traffic management and QoS mechanisms. Current efforts to solve this problem and their limitations will also be discussed.
