ABSTRACT
The next generation of computer and telecommunication networks will use the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM). ATM networks use small fixed size cells to transmit information. This allows them to share the same network for voice, video, and data at a wide range of distances. Most computer and telecommunication companies are working on ATM products and services.
In this tutorial seminar, we will give a brief history and overview of the ATM technology. The key features that allow this technology to work better than the current packet networks will be presented including why this technology allows wider ranges of distance and number of nodes. Various networking interfaces that are being standardized will be explained.
