Optical Networks: Recent Advances, Trends, and Issues

Current economic downturn has seriously affected telecommunications industry in general including optical networking. The demise of competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) has lead to a serious blow to future demands for the latest technology.

This talk will present the key developments and issues of the last one year in optical networking industry, technology, and standards.

In the industry, many of the past projections on the traffic and capacity growth are being questioned. The issue of all-optical (OOO) vs electrical (OEO) is being discussed with some arguing the favor of the status quo.

Ethernet's features and capabilities are being extended to match those of SONET/SDH. These developments will be reviewed.
