Raj Jain, "Optical Networking with IP over DWDM: Recent Advances, Trends, and Issues,"
IEEE Distinguished Lecture at IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IISc Bangalore, and Trivandrum, December 16-20, 2001
ABSTRACT
With the successful deployments of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) in telecommunications networks, capacity of optical fibers has grown to multi-terabits per second. This has lead the industry to look for ways to find novel ways for transport and switching at high-speed.
Currently, optical networking industry, like most networking technologies, is suffering from an economic downturn. Is there a future for optical networking? This is the starting point for this talk, which also includes discussions of issues that are being debated in the industry. In particular, the issues of traffic growth slowdown, Ethernet vs SONET, ring vs mesh topologies, will be discussed.
New technological developments providing even more capacity increase in fiber will also be presented.
Changes are being proposed in the Internet Protocol (IP) to be able to support high-speed switching in DWDM networks. These changes and related issues will be explained.
