ABSTRACT
The trend toward increasing link bandwidths, processor speeds, and memory sizes has helped fuel the congestion problem and has made it the key performance issue in the design of high-speed computer networking protocols. Traffic management scheme adopted by the ATM forum will be explained. The scheme gives considerable flexibility to switches in allocating resources. Common mistakes in the design of congestion schemes will be discussed. New switch algorithms that provide short queue lengths with a high link utilizations will be presented.
